Today at THT

Raymond Chandler once wrote that "The law isn't justice. It's a very imperfect mechanism. If you press exactly the right buttons and are also lucky, justice may show up in the answer. A mechanism is all the law was ever intended to be.”

The way I see it, if it's all just luck and the operation of machinery, I can afford to spend a lot of my day away from my cases talking about baseball.

  • Richard Barbieri's This Annotated Week in Baseball History looks at how the A's of the 1950s simply bent over for the New York Yankees. You know, today's Kansas City baseball club seems to make just as many bad moves as those old Kansas City A's teams. Thing is, unlike the A's ownership back in the day, Glass and Moore are not trying to rig it in anyone else's favor. In light of that, you'd have to say that the Royals' decision makers, while not corrupt like Arnold Johnson was, are more incompetent than anything before seen in Kansas City. Somehow, I think Royals fans would deal better with corruption because at least corruption makes some sort of sense.

  • With all of the talk about Sabathia, Lowe, and Burnett, Craig Brown doesn't want us to forget that there's a second tier out there, and nothing is more "second tier" than Oliver Perez.

  • In light of all of the week's activity, the guys at Fantasy Focus have been going without sleep to keep up. Late yesterday Victor Wang analyzed the Joyce-for-Jackson deal. No, Tiger fans, he doesn't make it look any better for you than you first thought. Also, Derek Carty takes a two-part look at the Putz-and-11-other-guys trade. Me? I just like to say Putz. Putz, Putz, Putz, Putz. Finally, Carty looks at the fantasy impact of the Sabathia signing. I think the biggest fantasy in all of this is the idea among Yankee fans that this will enable the Bombers to win the World Series.

History is about to repeat itself again, but instead of the pipeline go to New York, it’s going to be more like Sherman’s March to the Sea, and the destination is Atlanta.

Or actually the other way around, as everyone who ever played for the Braves while Moore was there will get to come play in Kansas City.

Hey, if they were good enough to help win 14 straight division titles, they must be good enough to help the Royals.

    Yeah, Farnsworth.
    Yeah, Furcal.

    Yeah, Francouer.

Becasue he’s coming. Do you see another theme there. I do, and its an F. Like FAILURE.

Ron, don’t forget Horacio Ramirez, Kyle Davies and my personal favorite… Tony Pena, Jr.

    Now I’m depressed.
