My Morning in Exile

Water on the moon? “The Lcross Mission” Noah Cross? Water where it should not naturally be? Forget it Jake . . .

  • Brent Mayne has the most sensible insight I’ve heard regarding signs since I saw the live recording of Five Man Acoustical Jam at the Trocadero. No, I wasn’t there to see Tesla. I thought it was a Dead Milkmen show.
  • We all go a little mad sometimes.
  • The Nats are gonna pull a Belliard. If that doesn’t work, they can try a Boeski, a Jim Brown, a Miss Daisy, two Jethros and a Leon Spinks, not to mention the biggest Ella Fitzgerald ever. Yeah, I know I’ve used that one before.
  • You know what would be cool? The Silver Surfer Awards. Wait, that’s no good. Norrin Radd would just win it every year. Unless Torii Hunter discovers the Power Cosmic.
  • The Rangers can’t afford a buck fifty for a Cherry Coke Zero, yet they want Vlad Guerrero. Whatever.
  • You’re not gonna believe this, but Heyman says that Boras says that a Boras client is, like, super valuable and highly desirable. I know. I’m just as shocked as you are.
  • I don’t know why those kitty cats were even nosin’ around for water up there. Don’t they know what happens to nosy fellows? Huh? No? Wanna guess? Huh? No?

One of your NBC posters had a good observation about Damon: the Yankee’s have $ 32.5M coming off the books in Damon, Matsui, and Nady.

What people are tending to forget is that the Yankees passed on Santana two years ago to position themselves for Sabathia, who signed for roughly the same money and had no injury question marks like Santana did.

I think the Yankees will do the same thing to get Roy Halladay, who is a free agent at the end of this year. Lackey is too injury prone to spend the kind of money that he wants, although they may make a courtesy offer to make sure whoever gets him feels pain in the signing.

Going after Matt Holliday or Jason Bay will also not yield a player of Texeira’s caliber even though Boras wants Tex money, and Bay will be right behind that.

So I think the Yankees will do an Abreu-type
rental for a left fielder for 2009, a lower cost veteran with acceptable skills, save their money for Roy Halladay, and move their rookie into left in 2011.

If that 2009 rental is Jonny Damon at $10M plus an option, so be it. The Yankees won’t do $ 15M over 4 years.

And I don’t see the Giants getting Damon for Boras money, not with the Zito and Rowand contract albatrosses around their neck.

If I’m Cashman, I let the Damon thing play and keep the money in my pocket for the real blue-chip guy.

I don’t think teams are that forward thinking in baseball, especially regarding pitchers. This isn’t the NBA, after all, where you have to plan on signing a star a decade in advance.

If injury history were that big a deal, Burnett wouldn’t have been signed for big money and years. The Yankees will pursue Lackey, at the very least because they can’t trust anyone past #2 in the rotation right now.

Johnny Damon must have a pretty short memory.  Last year Giambi and particularly Abreu were left to go ride in the sunset with similiar or better numbers.Bernie Williams would have played for tips a couple of years ago but no bites.
At the rate Damon is going down the garden path with Boras he’s gonna end up in ol’ stompin’ grounds with Farnsworthless.
And I would like to see him back, but my money’s on Matsui right now. Or neither, with Granderson in center.

    It’s ok to re-use Ocean’s 11 quips, Craig.

    It’s ok.

Texas wants Vlad Guerrero just so Guerrero can’t hit against them any more.  I think Vladdy’s hitting like .375/.460/.700 against the Rangers.  In other words, he’s basically what Pujols does against everyone.

What kind of car does Vlad drive? Well, thinking it over, I would have to say, he probably drives a… bitchin’ Camero.

If Norrin Radd didn’t win the Silver Surfer award, would Galactus take his revenge by eating the planet?  I guess it would depend on if it were pre or post-betrayal.  Would The Watcher step in?

BTW, the Surfer is one of the best examples of how much Jack Kirby ruled.  When he drew those issues of FF introducing Galactus, Kirby just included the Surfer on his own – he and Stan Lee hadn’t talked about it beforehand.  Genius, that Kirby.

    Someone had to do it.
