Quote of the Day

“Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant Thursday evening to you, wherever you may be. The Dodgers and the city of Los Angeles and all of California and for that matter, all of baseball, still shocked and stunned over the suspension of Manny Ramirez. We’ll have more to say about that a little bit later on — but no one man stops baseball …”

— Vin Scully, note-perfect as always.

He’s right – baseball is bigger than any one player and for what it is worth bigger than the PEDs era as well.  Baseball has survived some shameful times in its past, survived World Wars and will survive the PEDs era because it is a great game to play, watch and debate.

While the Bill Plashke’s of the world are screaming that the sky is falling I think the vast majority of fans are learning how to compartmentalize the era for what it is/was and will still show up at ballparks all around the country.  I know I will be enjoying the PawSox playing the Clippers tomorrow with my dad and my 3 yo daughter and buying ice cream for each of them as I pay my dad back for all the games he took me to and starting the cycle over again with my daughter.

That Scully guy might have a career in broadcasting if he continues like this.

The best part of getting the MLB Radio package a few years ago was to be going to bed on the east coast listening to Vin start a game on the west coast.

They do not make them like that anymore.

My favorite part about reading Vin Scully quotes like this, besides the supreme quality of the words I mean, is that it’s impossible for me not to read them in his voice. I can hear the various inflections and stresses on each word, and it just makes the quote that much better. Good times.

I moved away from LA 13 years ago, and I still miss hearing Vinnie call the games.

And then he went on to remind us, as he does every game, that Rich Aurilia worked as a stagehand in Brooklyn while he was a teenager. No one man stops Vin repeating his stories.

I pray that Vin lives to be 200 years old and stays healthy and interested in baseball the whole time…

If I were a pitcher that threw a no-no or a perfecto, and Vin wasn’t in the booth to call it, I’d pay him whatever it took to do a voice over on the whole thing from start to finish.  And if whoever actually did the play by play originally were offended by that, I would suggest that they make an appointment with a neurosurgeon for ego-reduction surgery…..

Richard – You just made me have an awful thought. If there’s ever an Orioles no-hitter in the next few years (fat chance, I know) it’s going to be called by the likes of Jim Hunter and Buck Martinez. That’s just a horrible thought.

Even their best team of Gary Thorne and Jim Palmer would be mediocre at best. The best one could hope for would be Joe Angel doing it by himself. And he doesn’t work alone. He’s got Manfra hanging around. Ugh.

How true. This is why he’s Vin Scully and we’re mere mortals.

Good point, Josh.  I have yet to figure out the best way to plug Facebook stuff.

Buck Martinez is so God-awful, after last year’s LDS, I was sure he would be on the “retired” crew, not sent along to the LCS!  It ALMOST made me not watch any more playoffs……
