Roster Doctor

Welcome to THT Fantasy’s Roster Doctor. If you’d like your team to be analyzed by one of our fantasy baseball experts, please send your full roster to this address. Also be sure to include your league’s player pool (mixed, AL-only, NL-only), number of teams, scoring format (roto, head-to-head, points, etc.), categories, whether or not it’s a keeper league, and any other pertinent information. If your roster is selected it will be analyzed in a future Roster Doctor column.

Elbert’s team will be examined today. Let’s see if we can help push it into first from second place.

Nope, I never thought a man named Ubaldo would ever lead my fantasy team either. (Icon/SMI)

UT: Scott Hairston
BN: Nate McLouth

Starting off with the hitting and more specifically your infield, I love it. Even though this is a mixed league, at 16 teams deep it plays deep and having no holes in your infield is impressive. No need to change anything in there.

Your outfield however, and you pointed this out as well, is the weaker part of your lineup. The pair of Astros you own, Lee and Pence, are off to slow starts but trying to trade them at their low point would not be a smart idea. They have proven themselves quality hitters and should begin to rebound soon enough. Rowand is the one I like the least going forward but as a third outfielder he can suffice.

Hairston is a solid under-the-radar fantasy contributor in both power and steals and I would try to keep him over Kennedy and McLouth when your injured players become healthy. For a boost in steals see if Coco Crisp is available to be picked up, who should begin playing within the next week. Other pickups I would consider are Jonny Gomes, Seth Smith, and Nate Schierholtz if they are available. Overall your hitting is a strong point and if one of your currently DL’d batters plays well, I would try to trade one of your infielders—Morales is a good candidate—for an elite outfielder.

In a head-to-head league sometimes all you need is one star pitcher to carry your team, and obviously you have that in Jiminez. Beneath him I like your depth of Harang, Baker (who have gotten unlucky thus far), Danks, and Gorzelanny. Packaging one of these pitchers with a hitter for a hitting upgrade would be worth trying given your starting pitching depth. Kazmir I feel is cuttable and instead I would add another reliever to help your ratios.

Overall I like your team and it should remain at the top of the standings, good work.

Well constructed roster, especially if Furcal and Guillen can climb off the DL for extended periods of time.

I agree with Paul, diversify away from Houston OF’s. Guillen’s soon to be acquired 2b eligibility should help you absorb the loss of a MI. I agree that Morales is probably the easiest to send packing.

with McLouth, Lee & Pence slowly dragging back to its production level, now I’ve added Cust and traded another slow starter, Adam Jone & Wade LeBlanc, for John Danks, whom i think could head to annual 2nd half struggles come july.

pitching now appears to be my achillies’ heels, now looking to steal upper-echelon pitching with all my bats.

I do not believe you can win more than .495 now what you have done is not good pitching and defense are the major needs check the cubs and Mariners vs the Cards and Twins.

no problem dave, as i always appreciate good debate from our fellow fans, regardless of age difference; however, i would think with the way you reason (old school of that) fantasy baseball, i could have relative success over you during course of long season; after all, in fantasy it takes more than well-drafted team to begin, in-season manuevers are just as important as draft.

i’ve had luck & some success playing this game, this league’s team has thus far gave me the most challenge (besides this team, all my other 6 teams have luckily succeeded @ the top 2 standing so far), let’s hope I can beef up more with this team, come on Lee/Pence/Mclouth/Jones!!!! counting on you!

Exactly the topic of my article coming this Tuesday. Strange.

dave,

my record is well above .500 (49-20-7), so thanks for sub-.500 concern; yes it might look like i’m losing quite a pitching in Danks, but i’ve never rated Danks this much, with my current hitting crops I now AM able to trade for a definite pitching upgrade:

C: Matt Wieters
1B: Adrian Gonzalez
2B: Rickie Weeks
3B: Evan Longoria
SS: Marco Scutaro
IF: Kendry Morales
OF: Carlos Lee
OF: Hunter Pence
OF: Jack Cust
UT: Adam Jones
UT: Nate McLouth
BN: Gordon Beckham
DL: Rafael Furcal
DL: Carlos Guillen
DL: Mat Gamel

Now tell me dave, can you draft lineups like this in 16-deep mix league?  don’t think there’s more team in better position than I am to really aim for eventual upgrade; especially in pitching, where i have ENOUGH bats to trade for without giving up much of my offensive cores.

i can understand your points on pitching (as anyuone would tell me that my pitching needs upgrades, thank you), but don’t really understand your points on needs for “defense”, does your league play defense?  if so, how wonderful for you!!!
