The Royals are the New Rays, minus the pitching and several other things

Via Jason, news that nobility, appropriately enough, is joining the Royals rotation:

It doesn’t matter, it seems, that veteran right-hander Sidney Ponson gave up seven runs in five innings Tuesday in a 7-2 loss to the Oakland A’s. The Royals seem ready, regardless, to anoint him as the fourth member of their rotation — albeit not officially. Manager Trey Hillman would go no further Tuesday than to say Ponson is “still in the mix” with Horacio Ramirez and Brian Bannister for the two rotation spots behind Gil Meche, Zack Greinke and Kyle Davies.

I’ve watched a lot of baseball over the years, but I never thought I’d see the day when there was room in a Major League rotation behind a guy like Kyle Davies. Indeed, if you would have told me before now that there would come a day when both he and Horacio Ramirez were on the same team and neither of them figured to be that team’s worst pitcher, I would have told you that you were nuts. Then Sir Sidney comes to town. Shows you what I know.

I think this is a Posnanski plot. By bringing in all of this subpar staff filler together, there’s no reasonable way they can get rid of his personal favorite, Brian Bannister.

Davies, Horacio and Sir Fatass Ponson… And Hochevar and Bannister are toiling in the minors.

Oh yeah, at least Farnsworthless is setting up.

Good times, good times.

Well, yet another reminder that money can buy talent, but not class.

I’m sure I’ve said this before, but… When I flew out to NYC & Bos last year to see Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park, I was hoping to have the chance to see Mussina pitch for the Yanks. As an Oriole fan growing up, he was my favorite non-Cal player. Well, Mussina pitched that weekend, but on the day I wasn’t at Yankee Stadium. Instead, another ex-Oriole pitched: Sidney Ponson.

That’s not exactly a fair trade-off…

Yeah, other than having four guys in the lineup who will be lucky to post an OBP above .300, and three starters who’ll be lucky to post an ERA under 5.00, the Royals could really surprise some people.

Actually, finishing 4th instead of last in their division would surprise the heck out of me.

Looks like the royals want their rotation to approximately live by the old adage that you can take the trash out the trailer, but you can’t take trailer out the trash.

Time to put Soria in the rotation.

Come on guys, you should know better.  There is NEVER enough pitching.

Russ Ortiz is expected to make Houston’s rotation (his competition is Jose Capellan), Scott Richmond is expected to make the Jays rotation (his competition is Brad Mills), Alfredo Simon is in the O’s rotation….and if I surfed a bit I’m sure I could find a few more…and folks wonder how Mike Hampton finds a job every year….

@ Jacob, I’ve slept in more than one trailer park and I’m damn proud of it!  Any Trailer Park Boys fans out there?

The Orioles will have a much worse starting rotation. I bet by mid-May every Orioles starter could be pitching behind Kyle Davies.

But at least we don’t have to deal with Sid anymore.

This is basically the elaborate answer to the question, “What would it take to make Brian Bannister a middle-of-the-rotation starting pitcher?”
