Ryan Dempster was pulled from the ninth inning of a 5-3 game against the Cardinals on Friday after giving up two homers and a third baserunner.
Dempster entered the ninth with the score 5-1, but he gave up homers to Jim Edmonds and Ryan Ludwick. Yadier Molina singled with two outs after Ludwick’s blast, so Bob Howry was brought in and recorded a save by retiring just one hitter. Dempster has been awful of late, yielding runs in six of his last nine outings while taking two losses and blowing a save. Manager Lou Piniella isn’t shy and he’s already come close to removing Dempster from the closer’s role twice this season. The Cubs can’t afford to give away any wins in the tight NL Central race, so don’t be surprised if Piniella announces that Howry is his new closer this weekend.
