Ancillary Costs to Long Term Deals

We have just recently seen Scott Kazmir and Ryan Braun ink long term deals buying out arbitration and some free agency years and this is not surprising to us as it has become the de facto thing for front offices to do with their young talent. But is it a good thing for both sides and is there a tipping point involved when it comes to what is going to be left available via free agency down the road?
