In Memoriam: Doug Pappas

Baseball lost one of its most articulate and passionate voices yesterday, when it was learned that Doug Pappas had passed away. Doug evidently suffered heat prostration while vacationing in Big Bend National Park in Texas. He was 43 years old.

Doug was an active member of the Society of American Baseball Research, chairing its business committee from the committee’s inception. He also wrote one of the best baseball blogs on the web, Doug’s Business of Baseball and was a regular contributor to Baseball Prospectus.

Doug’s expertise was the business of baseball, and no one was better at understanding it, researching it or writing about it. He was also a generous person, who freely gave his time and expertise to many of us who research and write about baseball.

You can read more about Doug and his background at the SABR site. We will all miss Doug’s voice, and we extend our sympathies to his family.

Dave Studeman was called a "national treasure" by Rob Neyer. Seriously. Follow his sporadic tweets @dastudes.
