Perfection

That was great. In my forty-plus years of watching baseball, I’ve never seen a perfect game or no hitter live, even on TV. My closest experience was watching Tom Seaver throw his great game against the Cubs in 1969, which Jimmy Qualls broke up with a Texas Leaguer in the ninth.

I remember that you could almost see the adrenaline flow out of Seaver right after the hit. He just stood at the back of the mound for a few seconds. Jerry Grote walked out to get him focused again, while the crowd booed Qualls. Bob Murphy, or maybe Ralph Kiner, said “they’ll start cheering in a second” and he was absolutely right.

Seaver turned it back on and finished up the Cubs.
