Some MSM writers should be stuffed in their parents’ basement

TJ Simers attempts to bully Marcus Thames. A man, who. apparently, is just as much a useless person as he is a baseball player.

He writes for the LA Times?! He criticized his granddaughter’s spelling in his column?*

* I actually checked to make sure that he didn’t write a humor column. Well, a non-funny humor column.

Marcus Thames has his faults in the field. I have never heard a report that he does not try to improve. He is not dogging it. He just is not that good.* This is why he has the job the Dodgers gave him. But, Marcus Thames is hardly somebody the deserves the disrespect Simers throws to him. In fact, Thames has a rather interesting past that would seems to confirm the rumors that he is a good guy and can be other, non-fielding related, positives to a team.

* I am being kind, he is terrible.

Instead of bullying Thames for being what he is, a platoon outfielder, and demanding he defend himself, why not take the time to introduce yourself and ask him about his mom. Would have made for a better story. Here the writer didn’t even bother to introduce himself.

Not to be outdone, Murray Chass, a somebody that used to work for a MSM, attacked Stan Musial based on something Marvin Miller’s best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl that overheard the stories at 31 Flavors last night.*

* Bueller? Bueller?

It must be true and important! He addressed it to the President of the United States! Because right now, with all other problems solved, gossip about Stan Musial is something a world leader should be addressing.

Two, quote mainstream media unquote folks write just like the bloggers they disparage at any chance they can get. Chass’ article would not measure up to the sniff test of gossip. Simers just makes my skin crawl. That isn’t writing, is an emotional issue.

I can wrap my head around bluegrass infused be-bop (or be-bop infused bluegrass)*. But I can’t wrap my head around is why MSM will continue to point to Chass and Simers as example of real media, when they have proven to be what MSM accuse bloggers of being?

* Blu-Bop …

And, by “Miller’s best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl that overheard the stories at 31 Flavors last night” you actually mean Marvin Miller heard it directly from Flood?

Did you even read the article?

It is not stated that Flood told Miller. It is implied, but not stated from Miller that ‘Flood told me X’.

“Miller’s version did. He spent a lot of time talking to Flood when the outfielder was suing Major League Baseball in 1970, challenging the reserve clause that restricted players to their teams until and unless they were traded, sold or released.”

Now where in the article does it say, Miller stated that Flood even TALK to Miller about it.

There is also zero proof that Musial hand any involvement in the restaurant other than his name and investment, and reported attempt to contact Musial or anybody else that might have been involved.

It is completely hearsay from Chass, recently has been making a habit of mis-quoting Miller in their conversations.

So yea .. this is just like the Kristy Swanson line from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.

The entire article gossip …

So, Marcus Thames should be shamed that he’s “just” a big league ballplayer?  I’m sure TJ Simers can go on PTI and tell us all that being like Willie Mays is as easy as trying harder.

And it was only a few months ago (mid-December 2010) that Chass failed to verify a story about Tom Verducci (for the first time ever in his entire career, he says!) and was reminded “that a reporter always has to check and verify his information”. (I blogged about it here. Joe Posnanski added his 2 cents here.)

I guess it’s time for Murray The Blogger to be reminded yet again about the very first rule of journalism.

Mat, I’m not sure what happened to Chass. At one time, he was respected for his ability to cover baseball’s negotiations (though he did slant the coverage to favor the players). But lately his blog has been filled with illogical statements, half-truths, and general mud-slinging. He’s attacked Sean Forman, Rob Neyer, and now Stan Musial (one of the most beloved Hall of Famers). Not sure what is going on…

Hey Mat, I absolutely agree.  What I was trying to write/say was that Thames has nothing to apologize for (i.e. playing MLB well or not is quite an achievement).  Good stuff by Granderson too.

That Chass article is astoundingly bad and filled with factual errors, that immediately discredit him. Gussie Busch didn’t buy the Cardinals until the 50’s. And Musial didn’t “organize” any kind of strike either, and as far as I have read, no one until Chass threw up on his keyboard here, has ever accused Musial of organizing or even being part of the strike.

@Lucas Keep coming back then. I have been a fan of Bela Fleck since his Drive album. Expect many Flecktone references in my stuff.

@Kent Simers stuff *might* just be his “style” but I just don’t get it. Thames is who he is, but from everything I read is an great teammate and seems like a very remarkable guy.

@Nate I agree. It is just such an incredibly bad article.

Quote from Curt Flood Jr.:

I have not read Mr. Chass’s blog, however, the incident DID in fact happen to my father and my mother. But according to my parents, Mr. Musial was not in the restaurant. His doorman that night called Mr. Musial by telephone, but by the time it could rectified, my parents were pretty much fed up with not being fed up.

@Bill

Thanks for sharing the quote. See, all Murray Chass had to be *before* accusing Stan Musial of being a racist, was verify the story that a 90+ year old man heard 41 years ago.
