Soriano Asks for $12 Million

Arbitration figures were swapped today, and one of the newest Nationals, Alfonso Soriano, asked for an incredible $12 million. Soriano achieved four (count ’em, 4) Win Shares Above Bench last year. According to Net Win Shares Value, that made him worth $6 million. When you factor in injury risk and the like, his most appropriate salary for 2006 is probably $5 million at best.

To stay in the ballgame, the Nationals submitted a bid of $10 millon. In a nutshell, this is why arbitration causes salary inflation.
