Suspensions

The Tampa Tribute breaks the story that Juan Salas was hit with a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy and testing positive for performance-enhancing substances.

The Devil Rays released this announcement: “The Tampa Bay Devil Rays fully support Major League Baseball’s drug testing policy. We will do all we can to help Juan get his career headed back on a positive course.”

Salas had a 3.95 ERA over 13.2 innings so far this season though he’d allowed 20 baserunners (10 via walk) in that time. Salas’ suspension comes on the heels of Ruddy Lugo’s demotion, meaning the Rays will need to make a couple bullpen moves shortly.

Meanwhile, the Star-Ledger reports that Scott Proctor was suspended four games for throwing at Yuniesky Betancourt during Sunday’s game against the Mariners.
