Updated Player Win Values

Thanks to comments at Tango’s blog, Ballhype and reader e-mails, I’ve made some revisions to the player value spreadsheet I published last week.

The highlights:

  • Fixed a bug in the way pitcher replacement level was calculated. (Special thanks to KJOK.)
  • Adjusted the linear weights I was using – I reconciled using the IBB, but excluded the IBB from the final calcualation. That error is now fixed. (For a discussion on why no run value is assigned to the IBB, check here.
  • Pitchers are now on the same leaderboard as position players. There is still a seperate pitching page with the full breakdown.
  • I have added arm ratings, courtesy of our own John Walsh, and baserunning ratings, which I calculated myself.

In addition, the sheet is now available online, thanks to Zoho Sheet, without requiring a spreadsheet. For those of you who like to tinker, you can export the document into multiple spreadsheet formats, including Excel and OpenOffice.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. If you have any additional comments, please use the Ballhype link above.

I would not recommend anyone take the approach of buying their first pair of running shoes and immediately going on a 100-mile run. Proper planning can make the experience more enjoyable, and the memories that come out of it even better.
