It’s the fault of writers like David Halberstam, George Will, W.P. Kinsella, et. al. who have romanticized baseball as this holy spiritual link to America’s moral past. Hey folks, baseball’s history is filled with moral degenerates like Ty Cobb, Enos Slaughter and Charles Comiskey. If you want to pick on McGwire, ask him why 5 and 7 forgot how to hit a baseball.
