Wieters Sent Down

I felt a great disturbance in the fantasy baseball Force, as if millions of Matt Wieters owners cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced:

The Orioles told top prospect Matt Wieters on Thursday that he will be reassigned to the Triple-A Norfolk roster effective Monday.

Manager Dave Trembley met with Wieters after Thursday’s exhibition loss to the Florida Marlins and informed him of the club’s plans, but the assignment is not yet official. Wieters will remain with the team over the weekend and is scheduled to accompany the Orioles to Jupiter for Friday’s Grapefruit League game against the Marlins.

None of this comes as a surprise. The Orioles intended Wieters to start the regular season with the Tides and spend several weeks at the Triple-A level, regardless of how he performed during major league spring training. He has played very well, batting .343 with a home run and five RBIs and getting several clutch hits in late-inning situations, and said he has had a great time with the major league club.

I can only assume this is to mess with his arbitration clock. And I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same thing if were the Orioles’ GM.

As for the Wieters-owners in fantasy leagues: fear not. Based on the comically over-the-top projections for the guy, I can only assume that, though He is down now, He will rise again around Easter.

Yeah, it’s an arb clock thing. I think if they wait like three weeks he gets an extra year.

The thing you fantasy types need to watch out for is whether MacPhail will try to avoid super-two. If he waits until sometime until mid-June or so he can probably do that. But then again, it hardly seems like there’s a point. Wieters is gonna get paid by the Orioles at under market value (but still be a wealthy man) and then he’s gonna get paid by the Yankees when he hits free agency.

You probably would’ve said the same about Longoria this time last year…

And anyway, I get that people expect Wieters to be great (believe me, I’d love to see it—I went to Tech with him), but it’s not a given.

Players that hadn’t made their major league debut were inexplicably left out of my Yahoo! friends league.  Luckily, I have the #1 waiver priority; so Wieters is all mine.

I hope He brings Tommy Hanson with Him.  I am sure the David Price fans hope He has a large vehicle

But when he sees his shadow, does that mean six more weeks of basketball?
